2.  The Perennial Philosophy

What do you mean when you say that you realized you had a "spiritual vocation?"

There is a common thread within all religions which Aldous Huxley once labeled the "Perennial Philosophy." I would describe that thread as being the relationship of the human with the Divine, independent of any institutional intermediaries, conventions, rituals or rules. This idea exists in all the great religions, though it can easily become obscured in doctrine and practice.

That summer after the first year of law school, I was asking myself questions like what was my relationship with God, what is love, and why was there so much injustice and violence in the world. The people I would talk to and the books I would read all pointed me in a direction that brought most of my questions into focus with a common response.
